The Poppy Appeal season has officially begun in the Cayman Islands.

As has been the tradition for the past eleven years in the Cayman Islands, poppy season is opened when the Governor receives the first poppy from the Cayman Islands Veterans Association. This occurred on October 16 at the Wharf Restaurant.

The red poppy has become the defining symbol of reverence for the millions of soldiers who lost their lives in conflict. Veterans and their families are provided with much-needed support via the poppy appeal.

The poppy appeal in Cayman continues until Remembrance Day, November 9 with all of the money raised remaining on island and going towards supporting Cayman’s ageing veterans and their widows.

“We wish to thank His Excellency, Governor Martyn Roper and our wonderful sponsors for their continued support of Veterans,” said a representative from the Cayman Islands Veterans Association.

The Cayman Islands Veterans Association is a not-for-profit organization. Because of COVID-19, there is no gala fundraising dinner this year, so the poppy campaign is even more important for fundraising.

“Thank you to the Veterans Association, our veterans and all their supporters,” said Governor, Martyn Roper. “In this year of significant challenge, we should all remember the sacrifices of so many that have enabled us to live in relative peace and stability today. Please support the poppy campaign, an important and worthy cause.”

Everyone in Cayman is urged to show their support. Those who would like poppies for their office can contact Mr Paul Ebanks at 916-0701.
