Remembrance Day is this weekend, but throughout the month of November, Cayman will be honoring its veterans.
Over at St. Ignatius Catholic School on Friday (9 November) students there held a special gathering in their courtyard to honor those who lost their lives in war.
St. Ignatius Catholic School student Laura Murphy said Friday’s Remembrance Day tribute at her school was not only to honor veterans and those who died but to teach young people about the importance of those who fought 100 years ago.
“I believe it was really important as a school community to take time out of our day to remember and reflect off all the veterans who lost their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ms. Murphy.
Schoolmate Sharon Roy said sometimes we forget to pay our respects to the ones who gave us the right to freedom.
“This Remembrance Day is not just for the past, it’s for the future and for the present and I do believe that people today are not acknowledging this day as they would have hundred years ago when it was their reality,” said Ms. Roy.
She said even though events like Remembrance Day can sometimes be overshadowed, it should still be respected.
“Pirates Week it a tradition that been happening in the community for a long time, but that is a freedom that was given to us. What if the war had never ended, would we still be celebrating Pirates Week?” Said Ms. Roy.
She said there are still soldiers on the battlefield trying to ensure that our freedom is not taking away.
“Even in today society, they are so many wars, even if they don’t become as big as the World War, that doesn’t mean those wars are not effecting peoples lives like in Afghanistan, Syria and all these countries,” said Ms. Roy.
Remember to salute a veteran if you see one and wear your poppies in remembrance of the ones who granted our freedom.
